Looking back over 90 years of service in New Zealand

Rockgas has played a pivotal role in New Zealand’s energy landscape for 90 years, evolving to meet the changing needs of its customers and the country’s energy demands. Established in 1934, originally under the ownership of the Shell Oil Company, Rockgas began as a small operation focused on the distribution of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) across the country and growing over the decades to become New Zealand’s largest supplier of LPG.

Helen Murchison, GM Rockgas said that throughout its history, Rockgas has undergone several significant transformations. “In the early years, the company focused on delivering bottled gas to residential and commercial customers, a service that laid the foundation for its extensive distribution network across New Zealand. Over time, Rockgas expanded its offering to include bulk LPG supplies and developed a reputation for reliability and customer service,” explained Murchison.

A major turning point for Rockgas came in 2018 when it was acquired by Gas Services New Zealand (GSNZ), (part of the Clarus group of companies). This acquisition marked a new chapter for Rockgas, allowing it to leverage GSNZ’s expertise in gas transmission and distribution to enhance its service delivery and expand its customer base.

Murchison said, ‘Despite the ownership change, Rockgas maintained its brand and has continued to operate under the same name, ensuring continuity of service and supply for its customers.

Now, Rockgas is New Zealand’s largest LPG retailer serving over 140,000 customers from 10 branches and a network of 25 franchises throughout the country.

“We deliver 45kg bottles to homes for gas cooking, heating and hot water, as well as providing LPG tanks for business gas essentials for all types of industries and needs. If you live in certain parts of Canterbury, Queenstown or Wanaka, we can pipe LPG straight to your property through our reticulated gas network.

“BBQ 9kg bottles are also covered by Rockgas, with a network of more than 120 Refill & Save locations throughout New Zealand,” added Murchison.

Throughout its history, Rockgas has been a pioneer in the New Zealand energy sector, providing a reliable source of LPG to thousands of customers. Its commitment to innovation and customer service has allowed it to remain at the forefront of the industry, even as the energy landscape continues to evolve.
