Summer is behind us. The kid’s beach toys are in the shed. But does that mean your BBQ days are done?
Not at all!
At Rockgas we know that while summer is prime time for our Refill and Save service, Kiwis all over the country are getting their trusty 9kg LPG bottles refilled all-year round. And when you think about the upsides of year-round barbecuing, it’s not surprising.
Welcome to roast season
If summer BBQ is all about sausages, steak, burgers and vege skewers, the cooler months are where roasts come into their own. That’s when your LPG BBQ’s lower burner settings and that all-important hood get a workout. Here’s a tip: when you’re slow-cooking with the lid down, you don’t need to use the burners directly under the meat to cook it – the ones either side should do the trick and avoid overcooking parts
of the meat.
Rather than pop your roast directly on the grill, grab an old roasting dish or a disposable foil one to hold it and collect its cooking juices. Just like in the oven, you can pop veges in there too.
Avoiding the dry horrors
It’s easy to make sure your BBQ-cooked roast comes our tender, delicious and juicy.
Step 1: invest in a meat thermometer, and check that you cook your roast to the correct temperature. Step 2: baste your roast every 30 minutes or so during cooking by spooning the juices from the roasting dish over it. You can also put a small metal or foil dish filled with water next the roast on the grill while it cooks.
Dessert course? Of course!
Since you’ve got that BBQ all nicely heated up, why not pop dessert in there once the main course has cooked? Baked whole apples are a fantastic winter BBQ option… just remove the core and fill the space with dates, sugar and cinnamon. Wrap the apple in foil and leave to cook while you and your guests are enjoying your
roast. Then serve with ice cream and soak up the compliments.
Don’t let that slow-cook turn into a no-cook
Your trusty 9kg LPG bottle will fuel your BBQ for hours – even more when you’re slow-cooking. Running out would still be a pain, though, so it’s a good idea to start with a full bottle.
When it comes to 9kg LPG bottles, the smart choice is to refill and save. Why waste what’s left in your bottle or swap your own trusty bottle?
Just take your 9kg LPG bottle – empty or part full – to a Rockgas Refill and Save location and get it topped up.
Then head home, reconnect that bottle and get set to soak up the compliments that every hard-working barbecue cook deserves!
